Defining next generation artists

Async Museum is an independent space for web art. Our mission is to discover artists who use the web as their practice, and recognize their work as a new aesthetic. Our philosophy is rooted in one idea:

The web browser is a twenty-first century canvas.

Hi, I’m Joohyun, founder of Async Museum.

I first encountered computational media in art school, and was intrigued immediately. The browser itself felt like a new kind of canvas, where I could do almost anything: draw generative visuals from data, make a 3D shape respond to a touch, let someone on the opposite side of the world experience a work in real time.

My work has centered on the web as a creative medium ever since. But when I tried to share it in any formal context, I couldn’t find anywhere that felt right. It didn’t fit cleanly into any category: not traditional art, not web design work, not new media, not media installation.

So I made one.

Async Museum will grow with artists pushing their creative practice on the web, and the curious minds who come to experience it.
